Discovering Emmett

What is it and how does it work?

The EMMETT Technique, practised in over 40 countries worldwide, has been shown to ease your pain and discomfort, increase your movement and improve the quality of your life. The technique restores muscle memory and releases tension and  involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points to trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body.

A world of possibilities

Redefining the norm

Issues that may be helped

Emmett Technique is about pain relief and muscle release and may be beneficial in a whole range of common issues.

The pressure required is not heavy or painful. “No pain no gain” has NO place in the EMMETT therapist’s approach.

The application of light pressure to the Emmett points is very powerful and is generally applied applied through clothing.

  • anxiety

  • tension

  • migraines

  • indigestion

  • walking issues

  • tennis elbow

  • numb buttocks

  • varicose veins

  • shoulder pain

  • stress

  • bad breath

  • knee pain

  • back pain

  • poor circulation

  • posture

  • headaches

  • fogginess

  • bowel issues

  • fluid retention

  • sickness

  • poor balance

  • stiff shoulders

  • foot/ankle pain

  • lymphatic system

The Emmett-UK website explains this by comparing the body to a computer touch screen :

“With the touch-screen, if you touch too hard, nothing happens. If you touch on the wrong spot nothing happens. If you hold for too long, all the icons start to shake. But if you touch with just the right amount of pressure in a specific location, an application opens and you are good to go. We believe the EMMETT points are small sensory receptors that allow access to the brain via the therapists’ touch. With the correct light touch, the brain receives and evaluates this stimulus and initiates the relaxation response in the soft tissue.  There are receptor points all over the body so the therapist can target the area of concern.  It may sound surprising but the relaxation response and the feeling of ease in the area is often immediate"

Physiotherapy

A typical treatment

Preparing for a session

Treatments take place in my treatment room in Grindon.

Your first treatment includes a formal assessment where you will be asked to complete a confidential health questionnaire which, together with treatment records, is held in a secure and private environment.

Treatment is generally carried out through your clothing.  Tee shirts, leggings and jogging bottoms are ideal.  Comfortable clothing and layers are recommended

Scar Therapy

More people have scars than don't.

Surgeries, accidents, sports injuries, wounds - scars happen in many ways and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  But all scars are the results of traumatic events however small or however major.

Most scars involve a break in the skin, but not all. Internal scarring can occur when you tear a muscle, tendon or ligament and there are no cuts or outward signs of injury.

For many people scarring causes relatively few, if any, issues.  But for some people the cause of a scar or it's after effects may be life changing.

A scar is associated with at least one traumatic event.  The situation leading up to the event, the event itself, the recovery and any after effects can all result in deep emotional and psychological attachments.

Let's face it, not many people consider scars to be beautiful!  Some people dislike their scars so much that they can't bear to look at them or touch them and feel embarrassed about other people (even their partners) seeing them.

Scars can be physically uncomfortable, painful or restrictive and may cause you to give up doing the things you love.  They may restrict your range of movement or affect other parts of your body that you would not normally associate with your scar.  For example, an appendix operation may lead to lower back pain!

Yet, with all these problems, discomfort and life changes, most people just accept these limitations and 'grow accustomed'  to their scars and the impact on their lives.

But there is a way that these issues may be reduced or even completely resolved - no matter how old the scar.  Even scars 40 or 50 years old can benefit from scar therapy.

Scar therapy is a simple, very gentle and painless form of massage that can radically improve the appearance of a scar, reduce pain and discomfort, increase range of movement around the scar and elsewhere in your body and change the way you think about your scar.

If you would like to find out what scar therapy can do and how it can help you, contact me in complete confidence

Working with horses

A quiet and gentle approach

Every horse is unique.  Character, experiences, issues and responses are never the same for two horses.

In the same way, there is no 'one size fits all' system of body working that suits all horses and each system has its own benefits and advantages. What works for one horse may not be suitable for another.

With this is mind, it makes sense to mix and match techniques from a range of disciplines to suit the needs and reactions of your horse.

The common theme is to listen and work with your horse instead of 'doing things to' your horse

Methods to suit your horse

For horses

Working with your horse I use techniques from a range of disciplines. None of the methods are invasive or use significant pressure and are based on listening to your horse and using the appropriate responses.

Most problems have developed over a period and realistically can't be resolved by a quick fix.

Usually it's a process of stripping away layers of discomfort.

The 2 main tools I use are the Masterson Method and Emmet4Horses.

Masterson Method

Less is More

The Masterson Method® is a unique, interactive method of equine bodywork that anyone can learn, to help build trust with the horse. Years of stress and stiffness can often be resolved in a few sessions, by relieving built-up tension in core muscles and key junctions of the body that affect the horse’s performance

Re-establishing connections

The EMMETT Technique is an established form of non-invasive body therapy that involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points of the body (known as ‘EMMETT points’). These points will release muscle tension, effectively alleviate discomfort and improve restricted movement.  The best analogy to use is comparing an EMMETT Technique Therapist with an electrician who has the knowledge to locate the critical points which ‘power’ the body and can re-set them with the correct stimulation.

Physiotherapy

Esme , female aged 29

I’m really impressed with the results I’ve had with Bern. I suffer from general aches and pains, stress-related headaches and have had a long-standing sports injury, for which I tried physiotherapy and sports therapy. The treatment I’ve received from Bern has been the most effective so far. My injury is so much improved that I can now cycle again. The lymphatic drainage works wonders for getting rid of the swelling I had around lymph nodes and It’s also one of the most relaxing treatments I’ve had. It’s hard not to feel completely at ease with Bern as he is so accommodating, explains everything fully and he listens carefully. He is skilled in ‘reading’ you and your reactions to the moves, such that he can give the most appropriate therapy for your needs. I feel Bern’s treatment has really helped me physically and emotionally. I would strongly recommend sessions with him

Hannah, horde owner

Bern has been working with my horses for around two years.

I was worried my horse had some pain and stiffness in his body after an accident.

I was familiar with the Masterson method of body work after seeing a demo at Mark Rashid clinic.

Bern uses a number of techniques to form his own unique practice.

Bern is a kind, patient and very skilled practitioner.  he takes his time to understand the horse he is working with and explain to the owner what is happening so they feel part of the conversation.

The practice he uses is non invasive, kindand adaptable to the individual horse.

The results we have seen in our horse  have been incredible and helped so much to improve the quality of his life.

Examples of before and after scar therapy

cs1 BH initial.jpg
cs1 BH post 3rd.jpg

Post surgical achilles tendon scar.  This surgery had been performed some 40 years earlier .

Before any scar therapy treatment, the client presented with a badly swollen ankle and severe limp before treatment.

After just 3 scar therapy sessions there was a marked reduction in the visible appearance of the scar, the ankle swelling had all but disappeared and there was a significant improvement in the client's walk

Mature mastectomy scar.

Prior to scar therapy, the client presented with long term, persisting underarm pain

After the first scar therapy session there was a marked reduction in the underarm pain.

By the end of the 3rd session the pain had disappeared completely and there was a significant improvement in the prominence and visible appearance of the scar.
